William J. “Bill” Mattes, 88, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at his home. He was born December 16, 1935, in Racine, WI, son of the late John and Marion (Gums) Mattes. Bill was a man of integrity who had a passion for service. He was known for his dedication to the community and his unwavering commitment to his family.

Bill was graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine in 1953. Following high school, he attended UW-Madison where he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. Bill married a classmate, Kathryn Bisel, three days after graduation on June 24, 1957. Bill embarked on a diverse thirty-four-year career with Kimberly-Clark beginning in manufacturing at Kimberly mill. He was involved in the development of disposable diapers and his time in R&D resulted in several patents. Bill culminated his career in 1991 as Purchasing Director of Raw Materials and Energy. He also served in the US Air Force and Reserves from 1958 to1966.

Bill enjoyed woodworking, reading, and traveling. He served the community as an Alderman, volunteered for the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade and Habitat for Humanity, and was a dedicated Rotarian with the Neenah Club and Fox Cities Morning Club. Bill attended and developed numerous courses and tours for Learning in Retirement at UW-Oshkosh.

Bill is survived by his wife, Kathryn; three children: John Mattes, Daniel Mattes, Nancy (Michael) Schlick; six grandchildren: Parker Schlick, Michael Kimball, Ari Mattes, Helena Mattes, Siggi Mattes, Nico Mattes; and a sister-in-law, Christy (James) Roberts.

A memorial service will be held Monday, February 12, 2024, 6:00 p.m. at Westgor Funeral Home, Neenah. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the hour of service. An informal gathering at Bridgewood Resort will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made to Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade or Friends for Health in Haiti (https://www.friendsforhealthinhaiti.org) in Bill’s name would be appreciated.
