Sen. Ron Johnson’s claim on Trump campaign's fake electors scheme in Wisconsin absurd

Saying fake electors were “political activity” is at best a half-truth and possibly illegal

Sen. Ron Johnson’s claim that the fake electors scheme was “political activity” is simply absurd ("Johnson calls for no charges in scheme,” Aug. 28).

The 2020 Wisconsin election was considered one of the most secure in history. The Trump campaign paid $3 million for a recount. It resulted in a net gain of 87 votes for President Joe Biden.

Every one of Trump’s lawsuits filed in Wisconsin was dismissed, dropped or lost on appeal. The 2020 election was certified for the legal Wisconsin electors. The only possible remaining action was for the votes to be blocked by Vice President Mike Pence on Jan. 6, 2021. Instead Trump scheduled a rally that resulted in an attack our Capitol.

In view of the above, saying the fake electors were “political activity” is at best a half-truth and possibly illegal. It should be decided by a court. Johnson pushing the nonsense of fake electors does great harm to our state, our nation and the peaceful transfer of power after elections.
