Former NFL cheerleader from Wisconsin eliminated from 'The Golden Bachelor.' But not before doing a cheer and busting a move.
Renee, a grandmother and former NFL cheerleader from Middleton, brought her A game to night 1 of "The Golden Bachelor." But unfortunately, she went home roseless.
Renee was one of the 22 "accomplished golden ladies" between ages 60 and 75 competing for the heart of Gerry Turner, 72, on ABC's new senior-focused dating show spinoff. The premiere episode aired Thursday night.
As Turner stood outside the "Bachelor Mansion," a limo pulled up and contestants began to emerge one by one. Each, having their own, special introduction to the man of the hour.
It was a familiar scene to those who have seen "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette."
And just like on those shows, many of the contestants presented themselves with a schtick, striving to stand out from the crowd.
Faith rode up on a motorcycle. Leslie came out with a walker, housecoat and permed wig, then ditched it all to make a grand reveal. Theresa, who was celebrating her birthday, teased Turner that she only had her birthday suit on under the black robe she was wearing.
While most of the women donned gowns, as expected. Renee? She sported a track suit in Chicago Bears colors with pom poms in hand.
Turner cheers for Chicago sports teams, and Renee is a former Chicago Honey Bear cheerleader, according to their show bios.
Renee, 67 years young, performed Turner his own cheer.
"Golden Gerry, you're my man, looking golden with a tan. Hope to bring you lots of luck, 'cause I'm the girl you want to ... marry!"
Turner broke into laughter and began clapping.
Complimenting comrades and dancing on a table
After the intros were finished, Turner entered the mansion to reconvene with his prospects.
"In this room, there is beauty and poise and intellect. You've really inspired me," he toasted to the women. "Let the journey begin."
The mingling commenced, and the contestants vied to score a little alone time with Turner.
It didn't appear as though Renee got any. And, if she did, it wasn't aired.
The camera did, however, catch her complimenting her comrades. You can take the gal out of the Midwest, but you can't take the Midwest out of the gal.
"You look beautiful. Love your dress. Everyone's so pretty," Renee said.
Oh, and there was also that time Renee danced on a table. When everyone was busting a move, that's where she was, along with a couple of the other ladies, including Faith.
Faith, who serenaded Turner with song, would end up being given the first impression rose by Turner, marking her safe from the night's eliminations.
Showing serious sportsmanship after her elimination
To kick off his first rose ceremony, Turner said: "I want you to know how grateful I am that you're all here and you've started this journey with me. I also know that this is working because tonight I felt connections with a number of you. Unfortunately, this is something that I have dreaded doing for many months. It's difficult to look at women as wonderful as you and know that not all of you will be here tomorrow."
During the ceremony, Turner presented a rose to each woman he wanted to remain in the competition.
As Turner gave away the final rose of the night, Renee's eyes filled with tears. She was one of six eliminated.
During goodbyes, Renee gave Peggy a hug and wished her "good luck." And, on her way out, Renee hugged Turner and said: "I'm cheering for you."
Now, that's some serious sportsmanship.
